It is filled with historical anecdotes and genealogical data about San Francisco and the State of California from its founding to 1854. Please note: This is not a paper book, it is a scan of the original paper book into the digital Adobe PDF format, written on a CD-ROM. The book is organized in three parts. Part one explores the discovery (1534) of lower and upper California and the early exploration. Part one goes on to analyze the causes and consequences of the Mexican-American war of 1846 and the cession of California to the United States. Finally it covers the discovery of goldand California's admission to Statehood. Part Two provides a day by day, month by month, review of San Francisco history from the cession by Mexico (1846) to the writing of the book (1854). Part Three examines individuals and institutions of San Francisco - for example, part three examines the vigilance committees, deaths & burials, the numerous great fires of the city, the independent fire companies, the hotels & boarding houses, churches, independent military organizations, and the various ethnic groups - particularly the Hawaiians, Mexicans & Latinos, Chinese, and local Indians. A very enjoyable read!
The book also contains many lists and tables concerning names of members of organizations & politicians, population numbers and ethnic breakdown, shipping traffic by origin & names - in short, many of the same data contained in a census.
The book has 824 pages with 150 illustrations and portriats. Please note: This is a scan of the original book converted to Adobe PDF format and written on a CD-ROM.
